Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a well crafted piece of cinema. That being said it takes a whole lot of mental focus to watch. Now I’m always interested in any alien movie. However, Close Encounters is much more focused on the build up to first contact. I definitely don’t have a problem with that. Really it’s the characters who are kind of average and lack luster. Not like other Steven Spielberg movies such as E.T. or Jaws that do well with balancing build up and interesting characters. No, Close Encounters strength lies in a magnetic score and piercing visuals. I guarantee anyone who knows cinema knows that famous score. It’s one of those nice alien movies, so don’t expect any action. The real payoff is near the end. If you can handle a long movie with hardly anything happening then give it a watch. Otherwise, I’d recommend it more to film student.
