On Like Donkey Kong

I actually don’t hate Pixels like most people do. Of course it doesn’t help that it’s an Adam Sandler comedy. I just felt like people beat it up too much. Even though it is pretty lame. Pixels steals its idea from a Futurama segment in the episode “Anthology of Interest II.” Like the segment, Pixels deals with aliens that look like arcade game characters invading Earth. That premise is way too identical for it not to be stolen. The only difference is the explanation of why this is happening. In Pixels, aliens view an 80’s time capsule as a declaration of war. So they take on the appearance of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, Q*Bert, etc. Attacking people using the game’s strategy. All the pixelated characters are big and three-dimensional. With the exception of the original character Lady Lisa. So the military enlists the help of grown up man children to fight back against the invasion. It’s silly but not too hard to imagine. If Klingons invaded us, wouldn’t a Trekkie be the person to call? I just wish Adam Sandler wasn’t the guy starring in it. Along with Kevin James as the President. That’s part of the reason why I didn’t go to the theater to see it. Despite my being a big gamer who loves 80’s arcade games. Futurama just did better in 6 minutes what Pixels couldn’t even do in 1 hour and 46 minutes.
