The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part rebuilds the shattered reputation left by the previous installment. The LEGO Movie was a pleasant surprise that lead to two seperate spin-offs. But while The LEGO Batman Movie was a genuinely good superhero spoof, The LEGO Ninjago Movie was a confused mess. So I wasn’t sure if the actual sequel looked promising or not. I was once again proven wrong. The sequel is set right as the DUPLO are invading. After disaster strikes, Bricksburg turns into a post-apocalyptic Mad Max style wasteland. Lucy (Wyldstyle) broods, but Emmet stays positive. Until an alien invasion takes Lucy, Batman, Unikitty, Benny, and MetalBeard to the mysterious Systar System. The LEGO Movie 2 takes greater advantage of everything LEGO. Along with DUPLO figures, they also use mini-dolls from their female friendly LEGO Friends line. General Sweet Mayhem is the mini-doll who captures everyone. There’s also plenty of characters made up entirely of LEGO bricks. Like the shape-shifting Queen Watevra Wa’Nabi. I’m not a fan of Tiffany Haddish, but I can tolerate her here. On his rescue mission, Emmet meets Rex Dangervest. A hilarious amalgamation of every recent Chris Pratt action role. As far as the humor goes, it’s silly and surprisingly mature at times. With clever references to R rated franchises LEGO will never make sets out of. They even attempt to have a new catchy song, but it’s a little on the nose. One of the biggest surprises in the first movie was the inclusion of the real world. Which is just as heartwarming the second time around. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is just random and wild enough to work.
