Every Man Has a Destiny

The Legend of Hercules does not live up to the legend. Between the 2 Hercules movies released in 2014, The Legend of Hercules is easily the bad one. I was already doubtful when it was given a January release date, but 5% on Rotten Tomatoes makes it the worst reviewed Hercules movie of all time. It bombed at the box office and was nominated for 6 Razzies including Worst Picture. Director Renny Harlin is no stranger to bad films, but I at least hoped for something fun. The Legend of Hercules is a rip-off of better films that takes itself too seriously. The 3D action rips off 300, but the unnecessary slow motion is constant. The CGI is bad and the movie looks like it was made for TV.

Kellan Lutz may have made a convincing Poseidon in Immortals, but he is not a leading man. He’s in shape, but his muscles never make me think of Hercules and he always has the same dumb expression. The story adheres to Greek mythology, but don’t expect to see Zeus, Hera, or any of the gods. Scott Adkins is the over-the-top King Amphitryon who rules Tiryns and conquers kingdoms. Roxanne McKee is his wife Queen Alcmene who goes against him by having a child with Zeus. Though Zeus is invisible, Hercules is given the name Alcides. Liam Garrigan is Hercules’ lesser known half-brother Iphicles. Unlike their bond in mythology, the movie also rips off Thor by making Alcides and Iphicles rivals. French model Gaia Weiss is Princess Hebe of Crete who loves Hercules more than her intended Iphicles.

Though Hebe is another one of Hercules’ lovers from myth, she’s not a goddess. Chiron isn’t a centaur, but Rade Šerbedžija is an elderly mentor. The only Twelve Labor that Hercules bothers to do is fight a Nemean Lion, but he just lets Iphicles take credit. Amphitryon sends Alcides off to be killed and he takes on the name Hercules. Liam McIntyre plays Sotiris who joins Hercules when they’re sold into slavery and forced to fight in an arena. It’s a lame rip-off of Gladiator that doesn’t get any better when Hercules finally uses the power of a demigod to break free from chains. He rallies an army against Amphitryon and Zeus ignites his sword with lightning. The ending is just as abrupt as most of the slow motion action. The Legend of Hercules is a disaster of mythical proportions.

  1. Leave it to modern Made for TV movie people to screw up something so good like Hercules and his adventures. Renny Harlin has done some pretty awesome films like Die Hard 2: Die Harder and Cliffhanger, so it feels very disrespectful that he got looped into doing such drabble.

  2. I saw this in theaters and I haven’t seen it since. Like you said, it was so bad….like “bad, bad”. That ending was abrupt and I was like “What….that’s it!”. Lutz looked the part of Hercules….until he opened his mouth.
