Went Down the Hill

Jack and Jill is all downhill for Adam Sandler. I avoided his movies for so long, because of crap like this. Jack and Jill is easily the laziest “comedy” of Sandler’s entire career. Some call it one of the worst movies ever made and I wouldn’t argue with that. It’s not offensively bad, but it is a serious waste of time and talent. The entire movie hinges on Adam Sandler dressed like a woman and talking with an obnoxious Jewish accent. He plays the twins Jack and Jill Sadelstein. I didn’t think it was possible, but Sandler overacts and underacts at the same time. Jack is forced to invite Jill over for Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, their birthday, and New Year’s. Katie Holmes is Jack’s hot wife without a personality Erin. Their daughter Sofia is mostly seen carrying a doll and Rohan Chand is their adopted Indian son Gary who tapes things for no reason.

Jill only has her bird and a ton of unfunny quirks set to a desperate soundtrack. The product placement is so in your face, Jack is actually an ad executive trying to get Al Pacino to appear in a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial for the entire movie. It doesn’t stop there; Johnny Depp, Regis Philbin, Shaquille O’Neal, Jared from Subway, the “ShamWow” guy, and more all randomly show up. When Jill isn’t being annoying, she’s being aggressively pursued by Al Pacino. You won’t believe how low the Oscar winning actor is willing to go for such a thankless role. The only thing resembling a plot is Jack needing to reconcile with his sister. Eugenio Derbez is a Mexican gardener who invites Jill to a family cookout where he also plays his grandmother. Followed by a long pooping session. David Spade also makes a fool of himself dressed as a woman. The usual collaborators like Tim Meadows appear as his boss and Nick Swardson as his punchable assistant. Even Allen Covert shows up as the homeless Otto from Happy Gilmore.

Real life twins open and close the movie with their endless anecdotes. The movie itself abruptly ends with Al Pacino doing a rapping “Dunkaccino” commercial that’s so bad I almost had to laugh. No one was laughing when Jack and Jill swept the Razzies by winning 10 out of 12 awards in every category. Including Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Actor – Sandler, Worst Actress – Sander (again), Worst Supporting Actor – Pacino, Worst Supporting Actress – Spade, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Combo, Worst Screen Ensemble, and Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel of Glen or Glenda. Even though the only similarity is a man in a dual drag performance. To quote Pacino, Jack and Jill should be burned, never seen by anyone, and all copies should be destroyed.

Jack and Jill are the only ones laughing

  1. I never thought I’d ever hear myself say it or see myself write it, but Adam Sandler didn’t look too bad playing a woman, at least from the TV Spots. The film itself looked totally stupid for sure and I wouldn’t have gone out of my way to see it, but I do give Sandler credit for doing Drag as only a handful of actors have made it work, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in Some Like It Hot is a good example.
