Tra La La Terror!

The Banana Splits Movie is a bizarre combination of horror and Hanna-Barbera. Unless you grew up in 1968, I doubt you’ll remember The Banana Splits Adventure Hour. I had no clue what it was before the movie came out. If you’re not offended by the idea of turning an old children’s show into an R rated slasher flick, then The Banana Splits Movie might be goofy entertainment. I didn’t watch the show, but it does seem like a fever dream with a catchy theme song. Although I feel like setting it in the 60’s would’ve made more sense. A modern audience like obsessed fan Harley still watches The Banana Splits.

The band consists of: Fleegle the Beagle, Bingo the Gorilla, Drooper the Lion, and Snorky the Elephant. Along with the man-child Stevie that nobody cares about. I didn’t recognize a single person in the cast, but Eric Bauza is worth noting for voicing all but one Banana Split. For his birthday, Harley is taken to a live show on a studio lot. Harley is joined by his hot mom Beth, awkward teenage brother Austin, scumbag father Mitch, and Zoe who gets dragged along. Paige leads an assortment of victims including a stage father and his actress daughter and two social media influencers.

Rebecca is a producer that’s told by a higher up that the show will be cancelled. Karl programs animatronic Banana Splits that turn evil and start a gory candy colored killing spree. If the plot sounds similar to Five Nights at Freddy’s, it’s because Warner Bros. intended to make an adaptation before losing the rights. Though clearly stunt performers in suits, it’s disturbing enough just to see innocent characters ripping people apart. The theme song is unaffected with an even more catchy Fall Out Boy cover. The Banana Splits Movie will likely please horror fans more than childhood fans.

  1. As much as I love Classic Era Hannah Barbara Cartoons, the Banana Splits weren’t one of them, but turning them into crazed killers in costumes was definite overkill and a little unnecessary. I’m not necessarily offended by the idea they went with, but with so many of the popular kids shows of the last 20 years or so being attacked recently, I’m all for leaving things alone and letting good memories live on.

  2. I did grow up in the heyday of those Banana Splits, and they were pretty popular then. It sounds now like every children’s show and character will eventually have their own horror movie. I am quite puzzled by who the target audiences are since a lot of folks have fond memories of these characters and never had any interest seeing them portrayed in slasher films. And as you note, others don’t even know who some of these characters were in the first place.
